I became a homemaker about 18 months ago when I got married in March 2024. It was something I somewhat fell into. I decided around June 2023 that I wanted to someday be a full-time homemaker after my husband and I got married and had children. However, it wasn’t something I expected to start doing as soon as we got married. I moved out of state and wasn’t able to take my job with me. I simultaneously realized I had no desire to any longer work a full-time job after spending a few weeks as a full-time wife. I LOVED it. I loved the flexibility and I love being the keeper of my home. I understand that being a full-time homemaker is not something every woman desires, but I have really learned to enjoy it. I’m still learning and still very new at it, but each day becomes a little more second nature. With fall practically here, I thought I would give you some practical tips to be a better homemaker this fall.
I love the seasonality of homemaking. I also love how simple it can be. As a homemaker, you get to decide how things are run and how much gets done in a day. You can leave your house or you can stay home the whole day. It’s entirely up to you. Will you let the cleaning go or make this a deep clean day? Do you want to parse out your errands throughout the week to get out of the house each day, or get them all done at once? I really enjoy that I am in charge of all the decisions.
Fall is my favorite time of year to be a homemaker. Things just seem so much cozier and I’m much more motivated to keep my house clean because I want it to look like it could be shown in a fall magazine. It’s important to remember that homemaking isn’t about perfection. Rather, it’s a craft and skill to be honed. If you need some inspiration to help you be a better homemaker this fall, you have come to the right place.

Stay on top of cleaning with a routine.

Many of the women I follow, myself included, have come to the consensus that cleaning schedules just don’t work. I don’t like feeling boxed in to cleaning certain areas of my house at very specific times. Instead, I have switched to the rhythms and routines method. I clean various rooms and areas on different days. I based my cleaning schedule off of this one and it has worked wonders for me! The floors are cleaned on Mondays, bathrooms on Tuesdays, linens are washed on Wednesdays, and the kitchen is deep cleaned on Thursdays. This system has allowed me so much flexibility while still getting my chores done. I also tidy up the house throughout the day so it’s much easier to deep clean. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s something that’s manageable and won’t drive you crazy!
Don’t get sucked into FOMO culture.
Fall is prime time for beautiful aesthetics that make us wish we lived in a small New England town surrounded by gorgeous fall foliage. Unfortunately for me, I currently live in Colorado where the foliage is, well, lacking, to put it nicely. I miss living in the eastern United States, and it’s hard to not get down on myself when the air starts to cool off and the leaves start to change. I also enjoy watching beautifully crafted YouTube videos which show off some amazing elements of fall, and they always have me longing for more.
When you constantly put yourself in the middle of beautiful things, it’s easy to want what everyone else has. It’s so tempting to get swept up into the latest trends and buy everything you see an influencer or social media personality tout as the next best thing. Instead of buying into FOMO culture, take a pause and decide if these are things that you really actually want to invest your time and money in. You probably don’t need new hand towels or mugs or welcome mats. If you don’t purchase another houseware item, you’re going to be fine. I promise! In order to help you be a better homemaker this fall, practice contentment with the items you already have and find new ways to use them.
Rely on and trust more in God.
Fall is a beautiful time of year and it easily puts me into the happiest of moods. When I’m happier and everything seems to go well, I tend to rely more on myself than on God. It’s always so interesting that He uses some of our hardest moments to move us closer to Him. To help you be a better homemaker this fall, learn to rely on and trust more in the Lord. There is a lot of change that happens during fall: We move into a new season, the holidays start to sneak up on us, and life turns back into a whirlwind as soon as the air begins to change. I’m always taken back to Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV): “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” The more we lean on the Lord, the better our lives are going to be, no matter what season it is.

Embrace and enjoy the season.
If you are like me, you probably have “shiny object syndrome.” When you seem something exciting and/or pretty, you get really stoked about it. This usually happens prior to the next season. I am absolutely someone who was making pumpkin spice creamer in July. I know, I was a little ahead of the game. It can be really easy to jump into the next season or stage of life, but I challenge you to be a better homemaker this fall by enjoying every minute of while it’s happening. Embrace cozy sweaters and boots. Make pumpkin and apple everything. Enjoy fall flavored coffee. Watch cheesy autumn-themed Hallmark movies. Wrap yourself in a blanket as you sit by a bonfire. Take it all in before the holidays hit. You may even want to consider enjoying the first week of November as a part of fall before Christmas takes over.
Eat seasonally.
One of the best ways you can be a better homemaker this fall is to implement seasonal recipes into your kitchen. Not only is seasonal eating healthier, but it will also save you money. Apples average between $1 and $2 per pound, while a clamshell of berries can run anywhere from around $4 to $10 for a 6-12 ounce clamshell. Opting for seasonal recipes will lower your grocery bill and will also help get you in the fall spirit. There are SO many fall recipes and roundups, that you can do a simple search on the Internet and it brings up endless options. Give it a try and find some fun new recipes to make this fall.
Get up early and enjoy the morning.
There is absolutely nothing in this world that compares to enjoying a crisp, fall morning while drinking a hot beverage and being wrapped in a blanket as you sit outside. If you are not naturally an early riser, I’m going to suggest that you can be a better homemaker this fall by waking up a little bit earlier to enjoy your mornings. If you have children, you might want to consider waking up earlier to have some quiet time to yourself. I don’t have children yet, but getting up early allows me to get my mind right and have a peaceful start to my day. If you don’t think you can back up your wakeup time by two hours, start with setting your alarm just 10 minutes sooner and continue pushing it back every few days or so. You will not regret it.

Find joy in each day.
If you don’t do it correctly, homemaking can feel extremely cumbersome and mundane. I often hear comments like, “I would be so bored if I was home all day.” Let me tell you something, I am never bored! Part of this is due to the weekly and daily routines I have created for myself. Part of this is also due to finding joy in each day. I am SO blessed that I work part-time and get to be in my favorite place: Home. Not everyone is blessed to this extent. I LOVE being at home and making it a place my husband enjoys being as well.
If you are a homemaker who is struggling to find joy each day, there are some very simple things you can do to add joy to your homemaking routines and rhythms. A popular idea is to create a dopamine menu filled with fun activities which bring you joy. If creating a dopamine menu seems like too much work, here are some ideas for you to try throughout the day.
- Make coffee and add a fall flavored creamer or syrup
- Watch an aesthetic YouTube video (I highly recommend the channel Trout & Coffee)
- Browse through a fall magazine
- Bake a fall treat
- Decorate part of your house
- Do a fall craft
- Light a fall scented candle
- Go for a walk under the fall foliage
- Make a fall-inspired dinner recipe
Create a schedule or lists for your day.
A great way to be a better homemaker this fall is to create a daily schedule or lists to help keep you organized. For me personally, I tend to pick one or the other. If I create a schedule, it’s because I have specific tasks or events that are happening at a certain time. I am not someone who likes to schedule out every hour of my day regularly. Instead, I like to use lists to check off as I go throughout my day. You may be someone who likes both, and that’s great! Creating a schedule or lists is a great way to keep you on track for the day. It’s also a good idea to add in some fun things to your schedule or lists.
Limit screen time.
Possibly the best way to be a better homemaker this fall is to limit your screen time. We have limitless amounts of media and knowledge at our fingertips and it never seems to stop coming at us. It can often feel overwhelming, especially if you spend a portion of your day using social media. You are targeted with ads and influencers trying to convince you to purchase items you think you’ll need. I challenge you to limit screen time throughout your day, specifically social media and TV time. Watching TV during the day on a regular basis can lead to a lack of productivity and feelings of laziness. Every once in a while is ok, but consider waiting until later in the afternoon to hop on social media and to watch TV, or at least once the bulk of your tasks for the day have been completed.
Get dressed and wear a cute fall outfit.
The evidence is pretty clear that getting dressed each day helps you to feel more confident and to become more productive. On top of that, putting on a fall outfit is a great way to get into the season even more. Even if you aren’t going anywhere that particular day, you might want to consider wearing a sweater dress with leggings or jeans and a fun fall graphic t-shirt.

Incorporate fall fun into your daily activities.
To combat the mundaneness of homemaking, be sure to include to fall fun into your schedule each day. It can be really simple or you can go somewhere and do something a little more extravagant. A fun way to approach this is to use a fall bucket list which will give you lots of interesting ideas for fall activities to incorporate into your day. Some fun fall activities you will want to consider adding to your homemaking routine include burning a fall scented candle, visiting a coffee shop for an autumn inspired drink, going thrifting for fall clothes, making homemade apple cider, or baking a pumpkin or apple dessert to eat after dinner.
Read a cozy fall book.
Nothing gets me more in the fall mood than by reading a cozy fall book. You may be wondering how this will help you be a better homemaker this fall. While it may not directly add to your productivity level, reading provides a sense of calm that can help reduce your stress levels and get your mind right for completing tasks at home. Cozy fall books are some of the best at providing some peace and calm into my life.
Praise the Lord throughout the day.
The last and most important tip to be a better homemaker this fall is to praise the Lord throughout the day. There are SO many ways this can be done, but it’s imperative that we remember to give Him thanks for all of the blessings in our lives, no matter how insignificant they may seem. A few simple ways you can praise the Lord throughout the day include listening to hymns, saying a prayer, showing gratitude for what you have in your life, and learning to complain less.
To all my homemaker friends out there, I hope you find some encouragement in this post. Homemaking can feel like a drag, especially if you are home most of the day. Use these simple and practical tips to help you be a better homemaker this fall, and remember to look for the joy in the smallest of moments. Until next time, Kayla.
