(Secretly Healthy) Peach Pie Smoothie

What’s better than fresh peaches blended up into a deliciously health smoothie and tastes like peach pie? Not much, my friends. With the end of summer on the horizon (Let’s be real – I started putting out fall decorations three weeks ago 😉), peaches, and lots of them, are the perfect way to celebrate the end of summer. In Pennsylvania, they are a late summer, early fall fruit that last until mid- to late-September. They are my absolute favorite fruit! They taste really good in my peach crisp recipe.

Peach season

Around where I live, our lives revolve around the seasons, but there’s a heavy focus on food. Lancaster County claims its fame of having some of the best farmland and soil in the country, so we have TONS (literally) of fresh produce from April until October. It’s a major blessing. Not everyone gets to eat seasonally or locally, so it’s a pretty cool perk of living in this area.

Peach season is something I wait for all year! They don’t sell peaches in the grocery store during the off-season, and the ones in the grocery store aren’t that good, anyway. My local farmer’s market grows them in their orchard and guys, they are SO stinkin’ good. I honestly buy a peck of peaches every week. I eat them whole, bake them, use them in savory recipes. They’re so much fun to use!

Celebrating the end of summer

If you’re anything like me, you’ll be glad for the transition from summer to fall. It is one of my favorite times of the year (besides Christmas and the transition from winter to spring). I’m honestly more in love with the anticipation of events and seasons than the actual events and seasons themselves. It’s how I’ve always been. I get so easily excited. And I am SO excited for fall! (Check out my reasons why you should get excited for fall). However, we’re not quite there yet. My pool in my apartment complex is still open and it’s been super hot this week – I’m talking in the mid- to upper-90s. For us folk in Pennsylvania, that is beyond seasonal.

Although I am thrilled with the many apple and pumpkin recipes I am bound to make this upcoming season, it’s still technically summer. And there is no better way to celebrate the end of summer than with a deliciously cold beverage. Enter, the peach pie smoothie.

Fresh vs. frozen peaches

If you buy frozen peaches from the freezer section of the grocery store, you could technically make this recipe year-round. But I truly believe it’s better in the summer when you make it with fresh peaches. You can keep your peaches fresh, but I like to take them and stick them in the freezer. The peach pie smoothie tastes more like a milkshake when you do! It’s creamy, silky goodness.

Ingredients

This recipe only calls for six ingredients:

Peaches. Preferably frozen peaches placed in the freezer.

Milk of choice. I’m pretty sensitive to dairy so I used Califia Farms almond milk. Any milk will work though, and whole milk would probably make it extra creamy.

Oats. Oats give this recipe a delightful texture that adds to the feeling of eating peach pie.

Brown sugar. If you’re really trying to watch your sugar intake, you can swap this out for zero calorie sweetener. I like the flavor that brown sugar adds, though.

Cinnamon

Vanilla

Making the smoothie

This peach pie smoothie could not be easier! I think it takes longer to pull the ingredients out of my cupboards than it does to actually make the recipe. Here’s how you make it.

1. If you have fresh peaches, place them in the freezer for an hour or two until they’re completely frozen. If you don’t want them frozen though, you can skip this step.

2. Place all ingredients in a blender. I have to tell you, I bought a Magic Bullet Single-Serve Blender and it has become one of the best purchases I’ve made. It’s fantastic for things like dressings and of course, single-serve smoothie or milkshake recipes.

3. Blend or pulse until all the ingredients are combined. It’s important to note that you’ll get a slightly gritty texture from the oats. I personally love it! If this isn’t your thing, I recommend leaving out the oats and replacing them with another ingredient.
